Collection drive provides opportunity to dispose of worn, tattered flags

Franklin County Auditor Joe Testa and the Operation Flag Committee are organizing a collection drive to gather worn and weathered U.S. flags. Local Scout groups and other community organizations are encouraged participate in the effort. The flags collected by Operation Flag will be included in a disposal ceremony conducted by the American Legion Hilliard Post #614 at 7 p.m. at the Franklin County Fairgrounds on Flag Day, June 14.

“Flag Day is an appropriate time to dispose of tattered and worn American flags,” Testa said. “This is especially important this year because many of the flags flown since Sept. 11 are becoming worn and are in need of replacement.” The outpouring of displays of patriotism since 9-11 has resulted in many thousands of flags being purchased and displayed. The U.S. Flag Code states that flags should be replaced when they are “no longer a fitting emblem for display.”

Testa said worn flags may be dropped off at the Franklin County Auditor’s Office, 373 S. High St., 21st Floor, the City of Westerville Service Department, 350 Parkmeadow Drive, and American Legion Post #614, 3898 Lattimer St., in Hilliard. Flags will also be accepted at the ceremony June 14. The first 500 residents who participate in the flag collection drive will be given a free Operation Flag lapel pin, Testa added. “The renewed spirit of patriotism shown since the events of Sept. 11 is a source of pride for all Americans,” Testa said. “By properly disposing of worn and tattered flags, we show proper respect to the flag and all who serve under it.”
