Flag day is a time to honor the American flag

Kweisi Mfume, President & CEO, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), today said, "Flag Day is an appropriate time to reflect on what Old Glory means for all Americans and to remember the many brave soldiers who died for its honor."

Mfume said, "Unlike the Confederate flag that some people in South Carolina want it to remain in a position of sovereignty on the grounds of the South Carolina state capital building, Old Glory stands for one America, a nation of citizens with a shared destiny. On this day the 50 stars and 13 stripes, not the Confederate flag, represents the true America.

"As the late Secretary of the Interior, Franklin K. Lane said in a 1914 Flag Day speech, ‘the work that we do is the making of the Flag’," said Mfume.

While the NAACP salutes the American flag and all that it stands for, the 91-year-old civil rights organization continues to call on the South Carolina legislature to remove the Confederate flag from a position of sovereignty on the state capital grounds in Columbia, S.C. The legislature voted to remove the flag from the statehouse dome, but will hoist it on a 30-ft. pole next to the Confederate monument.
