Flag desecration amendment would strike at heart of democracy: free speech
People For the American Way President Ralph G. Neas and Director of Public Policy Marge Baker sent a letter urging members of the House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution to oppose a constitutional amendment legalizing laws prohibiting "desecration" of the American flag.
"While most Americans find desecration of the flag offensive or distasteful, the strength of our nation lies in our ability to tolerate dissent and free speech even when-especially when-we disagree," the letter read. "We should not let a handful of offensive individuals cause us to surrender the very freedoms that make us a beacon of liberty for the rest of the world."
