Larson participates in flag dedication
U.S. Congressman John B. Larson presented an American flag and spoke to residents of the Saint Elizabeth Health Center in East Hartford as part of their Independence Day celebration and new flag dedication ceremony today. Larson presented a new American flag to the facility in honor of Michael Slomianyj, a native of Ukraine who survived a German prison camp during World War II and immigrated to the United States in 1949, who for more than 20 years has cared for the old American flag, flagpole and gardens at the Health Center. After Larson spoke, he presented the flag to Mr. Slomianyj and other residents, who raised it.
Larson stated: “For more than 20 years Mr. Slomianyj has cared for the American flag here at Saint Elizabeth’s, and I am truly honored to present to him and the health center with this new flag today in honor of Independence Day. Mr. Slomianyj’s story is powerful one that mirrors the roots of so many American families. Each day he has cared for and maintained the flag and grounds here, and through this daily act of patriotism he reflects his own love for America as well as the struggles and successes of the millions of immigrants who have built this country.”
Saint Elizabeth’s has roughly 180 residents, most of whom are elderly. A number of the facility’s residents are Veterans, and 85% are covered by Medicare or Medicaid programs.
Larson continued: “As I look around here today and speak with many of the residents I am reminded that this generation of Americans, who struggled through the Great Depression and the Second World War, spent their lives making this country great, and as they grow older, now is the time to give something back to them. We must defend the services and resources that help them to live every day, whether it is Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, home heating assistance and Veterans benefits. But there is much work left to do; we must provide a prescription drug benefit under Medicare to ensure that the elderly do not have to choose between putting food on the table, heating and cooling their home, or paying for the medicine their doctors prescribe.”
