ACLU opens "Fight for the Flag" campaign as house committee convenes hearing
The American Civil Liberties Union today launched a multimedia campaign urging Americans to "Fight for the Flag" as a House subcommittee convened hearings on a proposed constitutional amendment to ban flag "desecration." The campaign, which expands on the intensive field work being coordinated by the ACLU's 53 state offices and hundreds of chapters, features an animated computer graphic that web users can easily place on their own homepages. The graphic urges internet users to "Fight for the Flag" and links them to a special collection of flag-related material on the ACLU's Freedom Network.
The hearing before the House Judiciary's Subcommittee on the Constitution is the opening salvo of this year's battle over the proposed amendment. Congress has twice before considered -- and rejected -- similiar proposals. Although all of the subcommittee's Democrats are opposed to the amendment, the proposal is expected to be approved on a party-line vote. Once approved by the subcommittee, the House leadership is expected to push the proposal quickly toward a full House vote sometime in mid-June.
