Key West 25th anniversary rainbow flag section finds home in Toronto
The Gay Toronto Tourism Guild today
announced that a section of the Key West 25th Anniversary Rainbow Flag will be
introduced during the annual raising of the flag at Nathan Phillips Square,
Monday, June 23rd at 12:30 PM, presented by the City of Toronto and Councillor
Kyle Rae.
”We are thrilled, humbled and honoured to have a piece of the Rainbow 25
reside in Toronto, and with the Gay Tourism Toronto Guild,” says Ric Tremaine,
director of travel and tourism for the guild. “The rainbow flag is an international,
universal symbol of pride, of gay pride. That a part of the flag created by Gilbert
Baker find a home in Toronto, this year, in light of the myriad changes effecting
our community, not the least of which is same-sex marriage, seems only fitting.”
At a mile-and-a-quarter long, The Rainbow 25 flag, the longest in the world, was
unfurled in Key West, Florida, June 15th, during Pride Fest Key West. Spanning
the entire length of Key West’s Duval Street, the Rainbow 25 flag extended from
sea to sea, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. A contingent from
Toronto, representatives of the Gay Toronto Tourism Guild and Wilde Marketing,
Canada’s gay marketing agency, were on hand for the unfurling and will be
present at the Nathan Phillips Square raising of the flag.
