Third place archer Glenn Meyers elected U.S. flag bearer

Olympian Glenn Meyers was elected by the U.S. team captains as Team USA’s flag bearer for tonight’s Closing Ceremonies of the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. Meyers, who captured the gold in the team archery competition and finished third individually, will carry the Stars and Stripes and lead his fellow U.S. athletes into the Dominican Republic’s Olympic Stadium for the 6:00 p.m. festivities.

Winner of the 2002 Pan American Archery Championships, Meyers was selected after his third-place finish in the men’s singles competition failed to garner him a bronze medal. Based on Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) rules, no one country can sweep the medals in a single event. Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) and Guy Krueger (Blessing, Texas) captured the gold and silver, respectively, for the U.S. Although Meyers defeated Cristobal Merlos of El Salvador, 107-102, in the bronze medal match, the bronze was presented to Merlos.

Meyers has been a part of the archery community since the age of 10 when he first learned to shoot with his parents. Now the 42-year-old archer, who competed in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angles, Calif., is aiming for his second Olympic Team in 2004.
