Nine flags festival brings Christmas spirit to east Texas

There’s no place like the Nine Flags Festival in Nacogdoches for the holidays! Known as the birthplace of Texas history, Nacogdoches comes alive for two weekends in November and December with many activities to put everyone in the Christmas spirit. Each year, the theme of the festival centers around the nine flags that have flown over the historic city of Nacogdoches.

This year, the Nine Flags Festival is honoring two flags from the state’s 19th century history—the Fredonia Rebellion Flag and the Confederate Stars and Bars. “What sets this festival apart from ones of the past is the many re-enactments that are staged,” Diana Walker, festival coordinator, said. “It will truly be a ‘living history’ festival. Our goal is to educate the community about the Civil War era by recreating a civil war hospital, encampment and a battle.”

The festival kicks-off Fri., Nov. 21, with the shopping extravaganza, Holiday in the Pines. Sponsored by Nacogdoches Junior Forum, this event brings together more than 100 merchants under one roof.

On Sat., Nov. 22, spend the afternoon touring three 19th century homes at the Llano Grande Plantation. Other festivities scheduled for the first weekend include the Commercial Bank Lights Up Christmas lighting ceremony and a performance by opera singer Terry Cook.
