Country schools, battle flags included in History conference

From rural medical practices to women’s organizations to country schools and the history of automobile registration, amateur and professional historians will find something of interest at the annual Iowa History Forum, April 6, at the State Historical Building.

"There will be something for everyone," said K.C. Hummel, co-chair of the event, which is sponsored by the State Historical Society of Iowa. "The schedule is filled with presentations and panel discussions on a wide variety of topics." Many of the sessions detail the latest Iowa history research, including 75 years of school consolidation in Iowa, immigration from Mexico and Central America, history of labor and union organization, and clemency requests to Iowa’s governors at the turn of the 20th century.

An update on Iowa’s Civil War battle flag collection will also be included in the conference. Participants will have an opportunity to see the battle flags up close in the flag lab and learn about the preservation work currently underway. This year will also feature a discussion on the success stories of the Imagine Iowa 2010 initiative, which is the Department of Cultural Affairs’ program to strengthen the state’s environment for arts and culture.
