Governor announces $175,000 to preserve battle flags

Governor George E. Pataki today announced $175,000 to continue the State's unprecedented effort to conserve its collection of historic battle flags. During the last two years, the State's Battle Flag Preservation Project has conserved more than 100 priceless flags carried into battle by troops from across New York State.

"These precious flags symbolize the sacrifice and courage of New Yorkers from the American Revolution through Operation Enduring Freedom," Governor Pataki said. "In honor of the heroes who fought under and died for these flags and for the benefit of future generations of New Yorkers, we continue to invest in their care and conservation.

"Our battle flag collection is quite literally the fabric of our State's military heritage. We owe it to New York's veterans, past and present, to ensure that these symbols of their patriotism and dedication to duty endure for generations to come."

About 60 percent of the State's 1,700 battle flags, carried in battle during the Civil War, incurred extensive damage in battle, and bear burns, blood stains and bullet holes. At the war's end they were rolled up and put in glass cases in the Capitol where they have remained since. This improper storage has subjected these flags to the harmful effects of humidity, light, airborne pollutants, gravity and friction.
