Pole sitter Keith Grant goes flag-to-flag

Keith Grant, of Cordova, Tenn., the pole sitter and favorite to win todays GT4 race at the Valvoline Runoffs at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, drove flag-to-flag to earn his first GT4 National Championship. J. Warren Montague, of Manakin Sabot, Va., finished second and Michael Mazziotti, of Wexford, Pa., finished third. Grant, who was never seriously challenged for the race lead, powered his No. 10 Nissan 200 SX entry to victory circle with a 7.895-second margin of victory at an average speed of 82.284 mph on the 2.258-mile, 11-turn track.

The car was fast right out of the box,EGrant said of his run. I made a few changes this season that made it faster. The car was very smooth the whole race. I made a couple mid-race adjustments and the car just ran great. I pushed the whole race because I tend to make mistakes when I try to back it off. So, I kept on it even when I got a good lead. This car was run by my father for many years. In fact, he won the Runoffs in it in 1990 when it was bodied as a Datsun B-210.

Montague, who started third, powered his No. 32 Toyota Motorsports TRD/Pella Toyta Tercel passed Mazziotti on lap two for second-place, but could never catch the race leader. I threw everything that I had at Keith [Grant], but the car got loose at mid-race, Montague said. also, I was down on power to him. The motor was great, the handling was not bad, but I just did not have the speed to stay with Keith. Mazziotti finished third in his No. 55 Jackson Welding Supply Honda CRX entry, despite smoke coming from the car throughout the race.
