Release of pamphlet coincides with Flag Day
In honor of Flag Day (June 14, 1998) and to answer questions often posed by Staten Island residents, Congressman Vito Fossella (R-NY) announced today that his office will begin distributing a pamphlet on flag etiquette.
Fossella will make available copies of the handy brochure through his district office and to veterans groups on Staten Island. Residents can stop by Fossella's office at 14 New Dorp Lane starting the week of June 22 for a copy. The pamphlet explains the strict rules on folding the American flag, displaying it indoors and outdoors and the proper way to salute.
"Despite the respect that all Staten Islanders hold for the American flag, many people are unfamiliar with the strict rules for displaying it both indoors and outdoors," Fossella said. "During the many flag raising ceremonies I proudly attend each year, residents often ask me to explain the customs and guidelines that should be followed. The pamphlet is designed as a comprehensive guide to flag etiquette -- or how to display and honor the American flag. I hope it answers many of the questions that Staten Islanders may have about displaying the American flag." Fossella praised residents for demonstrating their patriotism by displaying the American flag outside their homes and businesses.
"It is inspiring to drive around many of Staten Island's residential communities and see the American flag on display," Fossella said. "It makes me very proud that so many residents want to show their love of our great country by flying a flag outside their homes. The American flag represents the ideals upon which our nation was founded. In its stars and stripes, Staten Islanders find the enduring strength and ceaseless inspiration that has defined our country for over 200 years. We find the courage to challenge ourselves, the strength to stand tall and the bravery to overcome all obstacles. Quite simply, we find the American spirit.
