Maryville High School backs out on flag ban

The Board of Directors and Advisors of the Southern Legal Resource Center were happy to inform their clients, three Maryville families with school age children, that the Maryville Board of Education has voted not to ban the display of Confederate symbols as used by Maryville High School students. The School Board's decision makes a lawsuit on behalf the families unlikely.

SLRC director and Chief Trial Counsel Kirk D. Lyons confirmed the Board's decision with the Superintendent's office today. "it is always a pleasure when a School Board remembers that students have rights too," Lyons said.

However the SLRC takes the position that the Board's action in banning Confederate symbols from all "official" items, including classroom use is unwarranted. "I guess the Board of Education felt they had to ban something to keep the Dept of Education from investigating them," said SLRC Executive Director Dr. Neill H. Payne.
