Rev. Jackson asks for a day of Solidarity

Today, Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr., president of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, announced that the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition will not launch an economic boycott against the Super Bowl. Instead, members of the National Football League have been asked to participate in a day of solidarity in protest of Georgia's state flag. And Georgia lawmakers are asked to voluntarily take action leading to the design of a new state flag. Should they fail to do so the pressure will undoubtedly intensify. Those who would identify with Dr. King cannot reconcile his philosophy with passive acceptance.

Rev. Jackson will ask Super Bowl players to wear the American flag on their helmets as a symbol of unity. This is not about a confrontation with the NFL or with Georgia lawmakers, said Rev. Jackson, But an opportunity for NFL players to stand up for the dignity and rights of the American people. Our goal is to unite Georgia on the state flag issue not to divide Georgia's communities. It is imperative that the people of Georgia have a flag that represents all the state's people.

"This emblem is not only an insult to black people, but it serves as a banner flown by those who believe in racial supremacy and slaver, Jackson said. This should not be an issue that only offends African Americans. You don't have to be a slave to be appalled by slavery or a minority to be appalled by racism. The flag is an insult to people who care about preserving an America united and free.
