Citizens continue to contribute to the flag fund

Secretary of State Bill Bradbury today touted the success of the Oregon State Flag Fund that he recently created to accept donations to purchase flags for Oregon military personnel serving at home or abroad. I am thrilled that the public has responded in such a positive way to the Flag Fund, said Bradbury. I am committed to continue to raise money and awareness for this program, so we can send a token of appreciation to Oregon service men and women overseas, he continued.

Since the inception of the fund, almost $1000 has been collected by the Secretary of State's office from approximately 20 individual contributions. The first flags for military personnel were mailed April 11, 2003, just a week after the fund was established. Thirty-nine flags have been mailed out to date.

Earlier this month, Bradbury announced a plan to accept donations to purchase Oregon State Flags for members of the Armed Forces of the United States. A 1969 Oregon Statute gave the Secretary of State the authority to raise money to give flags to members of the Armed Forces serving at home or abroad. Because of the generous contributions received, Bradbury said, we have been able to purchase and send flags to our military personnel. I know Oregonians will continue to donate to the fund so we are able to fulfill all of the requests we receive, he added.
