Sen. Kuipers to push for Michigan flag pledge
Sen. Wayne Kuipers (R-Holland), while speaking to a Borculo Christian School
class today, announced he will try to have the Senate recite the pledge of allegiance to the Michigan
flag each day.
Pupils in Sally Doebler's fourth-grade class asked Kuipers to push for the change. He met
with the class today to talk to them about how government works and say the pledge with them. The
pupils start each day saying the pledges of allegiance to the U.S. and Michigan flags.
"I'm proud to join Mrs. Doebler and her class in being such active learners, Kuipers said. "This effort reminds Michigan residents about the pride we all feel about our Great Lakes state.
Kuipers plans to introduce a measure on Tuesday, Dec. 9, that would change Senate rules and
have members say the Michigan pledge along with the U.S. pledge.
Michigan officially adopted the pledge with Public Act 165 of 1972. The act records that the
pledge was written by Harold G. Coburn but gives no more information about it.
A previous class of Doebler's took part in the legislative process in 1997. The Zeeland-area
class successfully pushed to make the white-tail deer the official state game mammal.
