Historic and important 13-Star American Flag with ties to Seattle
An historic late 18th/early 19th century 13-star American flag with ties to a founding father of
Seattle is to be offered at auction in San Francisco and via the Internet on Monday, March 3, 2003 by Bonhams & Butterfields, the new name for Butterfields - the West Coasts leading auctioneers.
Referred to as the Buell flag,relating to its having been illustrated in a 1780s book by Buell, the flag was the property of Andrew B. Young and the massive example of Old Glory - measuring more than six feet high and 8 ½-feet wide - features AB Young stitched along its side border as well as the initials ABY sewn within the field of blue.
The flag features seven red and six white stripes and the 3-2-3-2-3 arrangement of stars, the configuration adopted by the US Congress in 1777. The auctioneers expect it to bring $10,000 to $15,000 during the auction. Potential bidders can view the lot online at www.butterfields.com and the public preview of the flag, as well as 440-lots of American and European furniture and decorative arts, opens at the Bonhams & Butterfields salesrooms in San Francisco on Thursday, February 27.
