Australia Says Happy 100th Birthday To The Nations Flag

Commencing tomorrow will be five days of celebration for the nation to remember as Townsville hosts Federation North, a unique National Centrepiece event to mark the Centenary of Federation and the Centenary of the Australian Army.

Leading Australians, including the Governor-General, Dr Peter Hollingworth, the Prime Minister, John Howard, the Chief of Army, LTGEN Peter Cosgrove and Queensland Premier Peter Beattie will travel to Townsville, North Queensland, to take part. Federation North (August 8) is a National Centrepiece event funded by the National Council for the Centenary of Federation and the Queensland Government through Centenary of Federation Queensland. It will be staged in conjunction with Townsville City Council, the Australian Defence Force and other sponsors.

"Townsville was selected to host this major event because of its strong historical links and its reputation for staging great celebrations. It was largely because of strong lobbying by the businesses of North Queensland that the State Government agreed to be involved in discussions about Federation, and Townsville was also the place where Australias first Governor-General, Lord Hopetoun, first raised the national flag in 1901," said Chair of Centenary of Federation Queensland,
