Governor Pataki strikes stars and stripes
In celebration of Flag Day, Governor George E. Pataki today announced that he has directed the State Department of Taxation and Finance to revise its regulations to make American and New York State flag kits exempt from State and local sales tax.
While the current regulation which dates back more than two decades provides a sales tax exemption on the purchase of flags, it imposes a tax on the purchase of flag kits, which usually include flags, poles, mounting brackets and other accessories. Small flags attached to short staffs, typically sold in drug stores and other retail outlets, are also taxed under the current regulation.
"In New York State, we don't put a price tag on patriotism," Governor Pataki said. "We should be encouraging people to fly Old Glory and this decades-old regulation was not only confusing, but just plain silly. This long overdue change is the perfect way to celebrate Flag Day."
