Ground Zero Alaska flag on display at State Museum

An Alaska State flag that flew over the work site of an Alaska medical team who responded to the tragedy at the World Trade Center in New York City is currently on display at the Alaska State Museum. In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, the Alaska-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team spent 12 days staffing three aid stations near the wreckage of the Trade Center. The team was composed of physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, respiratory therapists and support staff. DMAT members hailed primarily from Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley but also from other parts of the state.

Following the return of the medical team, this Alaska flag and a companion Ground Zero U.S. flag were flown at the state Capitol in Juneau in memory of those men and women who lost their lives in the brutal attack on America and in honor of those Alaskans who served in any capacity to help the people of New York City. The Ground Zero flags were then circulated to schools around the state as part of the Alaska Democracy Project, an effort to enhance and strengthen civics education, that was initiated by Lt. Governor Fran Ulmer during the summer of 2001.

The Alaska flag will be on display at the Museum through January 11. After that it will join a traveling exhibition on the history of Alaska's flag, Eight Stars of Gold, which was organized by the State Museum and has been touring the state.
