Does Freedom Mean You Have The Right To Burn A Flag

With the U.S. Senate only a few votes away from amending the Constitution to ban using the flag to express dissent, the American Civil Liberties Union today asked Americans to consider whether freedom means we have the right to burn the flag. In the fifth installment of a new public policy advertising campaign running on the op-ed page of The New York Times, the ACLU said that a proposed constitutional amendment would make it a crime to desecrate the American flag. The proposed amendment has already passed the House of Representatives and is likely to be voted on in the Senate this month.

The advertisement says that Congress is showing disrespect for the flag by trying to destroy our right to free speech. "Free speech, after all, is what the flag represents," said ACLU Executive Director Ira Glasser. "Congress is pretending to honor the flag, but as it prepares to unravel our right to free speech, it is desecrating what the flag means and what millions of Americans have died to defend."

The year-long advertising campaign, a first-ever effort for the 78-year-old organization, will appear in The New York Times op-ed page once a month through December 1998. Each ad contains a briefly worded message from Glasser on topical subjects ranging from the war on drugs to religious freedom to government intrusions in the bedroom.
