Initiative to name South Africa's national flag is announced

On the 27th of April, Pretoria-based publishing house, WildNet Africa, published a book titled Flying with Pride: The Story of the South African Flag. This event was celebrated in Cape Town on Thursday night at an occasion hosted at the V&A Waterfront by Cape Town Tourism.

At this event, WildNet Africa announced its intention to co-ordinate an initiative to find a name for South Africa's new national flag, now exactly eight years old. "This was Denis Beckett's idea, and I think it is a fantastic one," said Dr Andrew McKenzie, founder of WildNet Africa. "As Flying with Pride shows so clearly, our flag is loved and respected everywhere: surely it deserves to have a name!"

"A nickname isn't the business of the flag professionals, nor of the government. It's the people. Either a nickname flies or it doesn't - institutions can't dictate it any more than they can dictate how the wind blows it," noted Beckett. "Pretty well everyone feels that same satisfaction when they hear 'Bafana Bafana! Two nil!' Wouldn't it be great if we could get that same thrill when we hear the name of our flag!?"
