Sons of Confederate Veterans Applauds Compliance with Castorina Court Decision by Union County Schools Declaring No Confederate Flag Ban
Castorina v. Madison Co. School Board is the law of the land in Kentucky, said Don Shelton, spokesman for the Kentucky Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, referring to media reports of a ban on Confederate symbols by the Union County Middle School and we are very pleased with the Union County School system’s decision to comply with the guidelines in that Federal 6th Circuit decision - which prohibit such pre-emptive bans.
In the important Castorina decision the courts said specifically that Confederate flags cannot be treated differently than any other symbols. Since that case concluded in 2002, numerous school systems in Kentucky and other states have reversed bans, or changed their policies and practices to make sure that they are in compliance.
It is important for students to recognize that in wearing the Confederate Battle flag they are representing the honor of the soldiers who fought and died under it, Shelton continued, We will not support disrespectful or disruptive behavior involving the flag.
On the other hand, students and administrators should be respectful of the rights of Southern students. Mutual respect goes a long way, and we anticipate seeing the school systems successfully comply with the court ruling.
