New Beach Warning Flags
Visitors and residents to Beaches of South Walton will notice a change along the shoreline this week as beach warning flags are officially switched from the old flag system to the new international flag warning system.
The new flag system, being touted by the International Life Saving Federation, consists of five color-coded warning flags establishing consistency with other beaches across the state and nation.
The change of the 14 beach warning flag poles is a main priority of the overall beach safety plan outlined by the Walton County Beach Education and Safety Committee to enhance beach safety. "By incorporating the same flag system as other beach destinations, visitors to Walton County beaches will be familiar and knowledgeable with the warning system set in place," said Tim Pauls, Walton County commissioner, district five.
An additional 16 beach warning flag pole systems will be erected by Memorial Day to supplement the existing 14 poles for a total of 30 flag poles systems. Beach flag safety signs, which will describe the new flag system and increase education and visibility, will also be posted as the new poles are installed.
Many of the new flag poles are being installed on private property through partnerships between the owners and the county, signifying the support and concern found throughout the community to increase beach safety initiatives.
"Together we have created a practical and purposeful beach safety plan to fully educate the residents and visitors who come to enjoy this naturally beautiful stretch of sugar-white sand," said Kriss Titus, executive director Walton County Tourist Development Council.
The international flag warning system was recently adopted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Walton County Board of County Commissioners last month upon recommendation by the Walton County Beach Education and Safety Committee.
The Walton County Beach Education and Safety Committee is comprised of tourism industry representatives, schools, beach vendors, park systems, and county staff, who took the meticulous task to create a clear, concise, consistent and conspicuous beach safety identity plan for residents and visitors of Beaches of South Walton.
