Georgia Voters set to vote against New Flag
A recent Schapiro Research Group survey of Georgia voters shows moderate interest in
March 2 flag referendum, as 54% of voters are very likely and another 23% are somewhat likely
to vote on this issue.
Almost half of likely voters will be selecting the 2001 flag on March
2, while 39% will be voting for the 2003 version. Only 7% are undecided. Five percent (5%)
volunteer that they will be voting for another flag, despite the presence of only two choices on
the ballot.
Support for the 2001 flag is strongest among black, Democratic, younger (18-39), and
Metro Atlanta area voters. Groups most likely to support the 2003 flag include rural, Republican,
50-59 year-old, white, and Middle and South Georgia voters
These numbers spell trouble for the flag currently flying, said Dr. Beth Schapiro,
president of the firm.
The Democratic presidential primary will be bringing out the voters most
likely to oppose this flag, she continued.
The questions were included on the Georgia Legislative Poll, a survey conducted twice
yearly by Schapiro Research Group.
The poll of 500 registered Georgia voters was conducted by
phone February 5-9, 2004. The margin of sampling error for the entire sample is 4.5% at a 95%
confidence level. The sample is demographically and geographically representative of the state’s
voting population.
