County Executive Acts to Ensure Flags in Time for Memorial Day at Suffolk’s National Cemeteries
County Executive Steve Levy earlier this week acted to ensure that the County's two national cemeteries would be appropriately adorned with U.S. flags in time for Memorial Day.
The County Executive issued a Certificate of Necessity on legislation to provide funding for the observance of Memorial Day at Calverton National Cemetery in Riverhead and the Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn.
The measure, which was adopted unanimously by the Suffolk County Legislature on May 11, authorizes funding of $1,500 for the two cemeteries and designated two veterans groups to oversee the purchase and placing of the flags on every grave.
We wanted to be sure, especially now, in light of the conflicts raging throughout the Middle East and Afghanistan and with so many of our service men and women in harm's way, that this small gesture of remembrance was not overlooked, Levy said. It means a lot to the families of our fallen soldiers and we want them to know that the people and the government of Suffolk County will never forget them and the many sacrifices they have made for this country.
Levy filed the legislation and issued a Certificate of Necessity for the bill on May 11 so that action could be taken immediately, as this was the last legislative meeting scheduled before Memorial Day. The Long Island National Memorial Cemetery Committee and the Calverton National Cemetery Memorial Committee, comprised veterans and fraternal organizations, are the designated entities for the project.
