Betsy Ross and the American flag
Betsy Ross, Ben Franklin, John Hancock are all names that every school child knows. Betsy Ross brings to mind the American flag flying in all its glory. We think of liberty, freedom, pride and the humble beginnings of the national flag. Known as Old Glory and The Stars and Stripes, the American flag flies proudly on the moon, it flutters atop Mount Everest and hurtles through space on the space shuttles. It is recognized world wide as a symbol of the United States of America.
Many historians credit Betsy Ross with having sewn the first American flag. Betsy lived from 1752 until 1836 making her living as a Philadelphia seamstress. She married John Ross, an upholsterer who was killed in a munitions explosion in 1776. After his death she continued to keep shop not very far from the State House where many momentous decisions were made concerning the birth of a nation. It is told that, three representatives, George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross, asked her to sew the first flag.
Some historians credit Betsy Ross with sewing the first American flag. However, no one knows for sure. It is thought that Congressman Francis Hopkinson was the most likely designer of the first stars and stripes. Many historians now doubt the likelihood that Betsy Ross had anything to do with the designing of the first American Flag. Why not check out the facts and make up your own mind about this long time myth, or should we say, long time fact. There are many good sites on the Internet that will help you with your research.
